Web3 Cyber Attacks Surge In 2024: $2.3 Billion Lost Across 165 Incidents

The year 2024 has witnessed a sharp rise in cyber attacks targeting the Web3 ecosystem, resulting in a staggering $2.3 billion in losses across 165 incidents.

According to data from @CyversAlerts, this marks a 40% increase compared to 2023, though it remains 37% below the record losses seen in 2022.

Key Statistics and Trends

Ethereum continues to be the most targeted blockchain, suffering over $1.2 billion in losses. The primary attack types in 2024 included:

– Access Control Breaches: Responsible for $1.9 billion in losses across 67 incidents, making it the most common vector.

– Smart Contract Exploits: Resulted in $456.3 million in damages across 98 incidents.

– Address Poisoning Scams: One significant scam stole $68.7 million, the largest of its kind.

Additionally, “Pig Butchering Scams” emerged as a major fraud trend, with $3.6 billion detected in stolen funds on Ethereum alone.

Notable Incidents in 2024

Several high-profile breaches contributed significantly to the total losses:

1. WazirX Hack: $235 million lost due to vulnerabilities in multisig wallets.

2. DMM Exchange Breach: $305 million stolen, making it one of the largest hacks ever, caused by a private key compromise.

3. Radiant Capital Attack: $50 million lost through compromised devices, first uncovered by Cyvers.

4. BingX Exploit: $52 million lost through vulnerabilities in hot wallets, with attackers moving funds across blockchains.

Despite the scale of attacks, recovery efforts were notable, with over $1.3 billion of stolen assets retrieved through bug bounties and advanced recovery solutions.

As Web3 continues to evolve, the rise in attacks underscores the urgent need for stronger security measures to protect the growing ecosystem.
