Phishing Victim Recovers $10.3M In $stETH From Attacker, Awaits Remaining Funds

A report from Cyver Alert revealed a phishing attack that occurred over a year ago, resulting in the loss of nearly $32 million in staked Ethereum (stETH).

The victim had fallen prey to a malicious contract, leading to the significant theft.

On July 6th, the attacker unexpectedly reached out with an on-chain message, indicating a willingness to return the stolen funds. The message, visible on Etherscan, read:

“hello, i am the guy who took your money i want to give the moneyback waiting for your reply”

This surprising turn of events led to the return of 10.3 million DAI to the victim’s wallet. The transaction confirming this return can be viewed on Etherscan.

The Victim Acknowledged Receiving 10.3 Million DAI

Today, the victim acknowledged the receipt of the 10.3 million DAI and issued a demand for the return of the remaining stolen funds. The on-chain message from the victim stated:

“Acknowledging that 10.3M DAI has already been returned to this address. Thank you for wanting to give the money back. Please send the remainder back to this address.”

The ongoing dialogue between the victim and the attacker marks a rare instance in the crypto space where stolen funds are being voluntarily returned. The victim remains hopeful that the attacker will follow through on their promise and return the rest of the stolen assets.

This case highlights the persistent risks of phishing attacks within the crypto community and underscores the importance of vigilance and security. As the situation unfolds, the crypto community watches closely, hopeful for a complete resolution and the return of the remaining funds.
